Your child can spend an exciting week learning to sail on the Downtown Norfolk Waterfront! Our fun, hands-on camps include water and shore-based activities led by certified instructors. Your child will experience the water in a whole new way while learning the principles of sailing and water safety!
Recently, our Sail Quest camp recieved the NAHRO Award of Merit for 2014. This award is presented by the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Organization and is in recognition of our partnership with the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA). This is a nationally recognized award and we were 1 out of 10 organizations in Virginia that recieved this distinction. Be sure to view the video regarding our partnership at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_iNzfrgGTA
Our Harbor 20s are safe and ideal performance sailboats that are perfect for any type of sailor, and can hold up to 5 campers. Each boat will have a certified instructor on board to provide more personalized training for each student.
Sail Quest (Ages 12-15) and Sail Quest Jr. (Ages 8-11): $250, M-F 8:30am-1:30pm
Our award-winning flagship summer camp, Sail Quest, will be back in 2017 for another exciting year! Sail Quest is a hands-on sailing and maritime science camp. Students will learn the basics of sailing a small keelboat, including boat rigging, water safety, confidence and teamwork. Students will participate in various land-based activities focusing on river ecology, maritime science, and STEM, while using the many resources of the Nauticus campus to complement their sailing knowledge. Sail Quest is a beginner sailing camp, so no experience is required! We will have two age-based camps this year, Sail Quest Jr. (8-11) and Sail Quest (12-15). Both camps will teach from the same curriculum.
Sail Voyagers (Ages 10-15): $295, M-F 8:30am-1:30pm
Sail Voyagers is an advanced sailing camp, for students who have prior sailing experience, or who have attended a Sail Quest camp with us in the past. Campers will learn more advanced sailing techniques, including being able to cruise safely in local waters and planning their own voyage. They will refine their skills learned in Sail Quest, while also learning reefing, docking, anchoring, and man over board drills. While on land, campers will learn chart reading, plotting, coastal navigation skills, and the concepts of currents and how they function. They will also learn the important role of tides and weather and how to predict them in order to help plan their own sailing expedition. We will be using iPads and Promethean Boards to access up-to-date maritime technology and facilitate learning these important skills.
